Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is SMHSO and how did it begin?
SMHSO (Somaliland Mental Health Support Organization) was founded in 2011 by Nasir Ciise Geeljire in response to the urgent need for improved mental health care in Somaliland. What started as a call to action has grown into a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting individuals affected by mental illness.

2) What does SMHSO do to support people with mental health challenges?
We raise awareness, fight stigma, and sponsor treatment for those in need. This includes providing vital medication, funding recovery programs, and offering continued support for individuals and families facing mental health struggles — especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

3) How does SMHSO work with communities in Somaliland?
We collaborate with hospitals and local communities to strengthen mental health services. Our approach focuses on sustainable, community-led care and includes training healthcare professionals and forming partnerships to build long-term solutions.

4) Why is SMHSO’s work important?
At SMHSO, we believe mental health is a right, not a privilege. In a region where mental illness is often neglected or misunderstood, our mission is to ensure that no one in Somaliland suffers alone — by delivering practical help, raising awareness, and empowering local care systems.
